Summertime Weather Brought out Record Numbers in Oakville

September 7th, 2009 - Oakville, ON - Over 1150 runners and walkers were treated to an outstanding day at the 3rd annual Oakville Half Marathon with great sunshine, great music and electric atmosphere along the picturesque Oakville waterfront. Runners at the Labour Day Oakville Half hit the pavement on the roads and paths that crest along Oakville’s downtown and waterfront neighbourhoods.  Local residents and runners from across Ontario, the US and beyond travelled to the town’s third annual half marathon event to kick off the fall marathon calendar and test their summer long training.

“We could not have asked for a better race day than today” said Race Director Jackie Vanderwater. "The weather was perfect for our runners and spectators, there were lots of course records, community support was outstanding and the volunteers were fantastic.  Great music by Canadian musician Chuck Jackson was a crowd pleaser and kept participants at the Park long after their races were finished. Our race continues to grow every year.”

The event included the half marathon (21.1K) race, the Prince Bay 10K race and the 2K Family Fun Run/Walk starting and finishing in Oakville’s waterfront Coronation Park.

Serbian born Predrag Mladenovic of Toronto captured his third consecutive win at the Oakville Half Marathon with a time of 1:09:28 and Cindy Lynch of Barrie took home first place with an outstanding time of 1:25:25.

Prince Bay 10K winners Peter Rehbein of Woodlawn with outstanding times of  35:46.4 and Carolyn Silvey of Toronto with a time of  40:09.1 also earned bragging rights as the winners of the shorter distance event which rounded out the Labour Day Oakville Half race weekend activities.

The scenic course attracted runners from all corners of the globe with runners coming from as far as Bermuda , Switzerland and Italy. With just over 75% of the event’s participants hailing from the Town of Oakville, Race Director, Jackie Vanderwater of Landmark Sport Group thanked local residents, volunteers and event partners for embracing the event.

“We really have to thank the Town of Oakville and the community for their help and support of this great event. Visitors to Oakville were enthralled and impressed by the course and the gorgeous town.  We also have to thank our event partners, Prince Bay Luxury Homes, Teriyaki Experience, AMJ Campbell Van Lines, Aquafina, Waste Management ,Running Room, Sure Gro, Rubbermaid, Oakville Beaver because of their support; we can bring events like this to the Town of Oakville.

With nine months left before Landmark’s next race, the Mississauga Marathon presented by Canon, and now a full year to plan for the fourth Labour Day Oakville Half, Jackie Vanderwater and her team will be busy promoting the spring and fall races to an even wider population of runners. “We always have our sights on increasing our participant numbers. With this increase comes a stronger pool of competition, a wider range of recreational runners, more people fundraising on behalf of our charity partners (the Oakville Hospital Foundation, Oakville YMCA and the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada) and just an overall greater sense of community involvement.”
